I asked this old vendor delivering bread/Pau, (I happened to meet him on my walk in Bandra (Mumbai)...) -
"Chacha, your bicycle seems to me it is in a very bad condition; the tyres too look worn out. I know some kind people who have given me some money to do some good for others, so if you want, I can buy you new tyres and get you new brakes and get your bike serviced too, from the money they have given me. Would you like us to do that for you?'
Sirtaj's instant reply to me (His name is Sirtaj Ahmed, lives in a Bakery at Dockyard Road, comes to Bandra west daily to deliver ordered bread/pau) :
- "God has given me this bicycle, he has given me a fair livelihood for over since 40 years, he has given me a puckka roof (he lives inside the bakery at Dockyard road along with his colleagues vendors), and I have enough to feed myself and my family in UP. The money you have received, please spend it on someone else, someone who does not have what I have already. Shukriya Sahab. Khuda Hafeez. Khuda aapke doston ko salaamat rakhe.'
Just how selfless and content is Sirtaj Mian, I thought as he rode away, and I walked away, and I whispered towards him 'Khuda Hafeez Sirtaj Mian. You are the true rich man amongst many poor people!'
